Engineers across the country are vying to be the first to create a fully autonomous street-legal car. This week, autonomous driving software company, Delphi, got one step closer with the first cross country autonomous trip. Their Audi SQ5, outfitted with tons of computers and tracking software, left San Francisco on March 22nd and traveled 3,400 miles through 15 states to make it in time for the New York Auto Show. A driver did have to take over for about 50 miles of the trip—mainly on on-ramps, off-ramps, and in construction zones. The tracking software gathered several terabytes’ worth of data and engineers made hundreds of notes so that they can continue to improve on their technology.
